WITH JOHN AND JAN - SUNRISE
Uphill power-walk on rural oak-shaded road lined by ranchy homes with big lots. Dumbbells in each hand, labored breathing from brisk pace, sweat-stained polo shirts. John's Links at Bodega Harbour ballcap, Jan's Indian Wells.
JOHN: I found them.
JAN: When?
JOHN: You were on the phone with Carol.
JAN: Oh.
JOHN: Any closer to a decision?
JAN: Bill's announcing his retirement Friday.
JOHN: Glad to hear it.
JAN: They're looking at Asheville.
JOHN: Nice.
JAN: Champion Hills.
JOHN: Really?
JAN: Trending, anyway. They're selling Beaver Creek.
JOHN: Cha-ching.
JAN: So?
JOHN: Travis did the trick. There's a street view of their mobile home in Snowy Range Estates. I don't know that estate is the most accurate description but it seems in good condition. Patches of snow on the ground. A few flags flying from stoops.
JAN: Theirs?
JOHN: No. Potted plants and two rocking chairs. Map shows them a few blocks from the Laramie River. And Tom and Wanda Walker in what might be a square dance blog I didn't click on.
JAN: What's the closest you've been to Laramie?
JOHN: Cheyenne for E-P-A versus coal my second year at Sawyer. A week in the middle of January.
JAN: Toasty?
JOHN: Twenty-below every morning and whipping wind. You?
JAN: Fort Collins for a wedding the summer before Duke. Speaking of Wyoming.
JOHN: I'm going to call her when we get home.
JAN: Have you ever square danced?
Pregnant pause.
JAN (CONT.): Do I detect a pregnant pause?
to be continued.
