Old wooden desk and chair at big window to the first hint of light suggesting treetops. State of wood suggests old, the Heart pine floor showing its age where it is not covered by a braided rug. Old leather couch under another window, space heater near dog pad under the third. Open door to dark of hallway. The desk features drawers on each side. On the desk: globe, lamp, old baseball. Pens and pencils in coffee mug. Blunt in, lighter next to abalone shell ashtray. Old wooden swivel chair with weathered seat pad.
KNOCKING OF BOOTS ON WOODEN STAIRS, LOUDER before DAN, 70ish, arrives in doorway with steaming mug of coffee in hand. Work boots, jeans, unbuttoned plaid flannel over tee, big grey beard. He stops, sips coffee, seems to somewhat survey the space before he walks to desk, sets mug upon it, pulls out chair, sits, sips, watches the treetops become clearer. He lights the blunt, takes his time to take two puffs, extinguishes blunt in ashtray, gets yellow legal from top right drawer, pencil from mug, closes his eyes, taps eraser on pad, opens his eyes, takes sip of coffee. FAINT SIX CHIMES OF GRANDFATHER CLOCK. Dan turns on lamp, begins to write. PENCIL SCRATCH ON PAPER.
EXT. TWO-STORY LOG CABINS IN WOODS - SUNRISE
The only light the lamp lighting Dan at desk, writing, stopping to sip coffee, resuming. FAINT CALL OF LOON.
INT. LOG CABIN MUDROOM - DAY
Describe. Door window to outside.
FAINT SINGLE CHIME OF GRANDFATHGER CLOCK a long moment before Dan enters, dressed as previously, gets beanie off shelf, puts it on, goes to door.
EXT. CABIN - CONTINUOUS
Patches of snow in the clearing through which a muddy path leads from cabin to woods. Dan comes out, looks to the sun, a ball of light through grey sky, buttons flannel, walks path to and disappears in woods.
