Baseball Movie (sorta) and Love Story (kinda).
HE's 50-something, alcoholic auto mechanic who lives in an apartment on Bainbridge Island, commutes to work in Seattle on the ferry. First scene is his daily sunrise beer at the table in his small kitchen. He has two more beers at lunch, two more before the ferry ride home, two or three more at home, the last one getting him closer to sleep. Wake, repeat.
He inherits a trailer in the desert south of Deming, New Mexico, left to him by the UNCLE who commits suicide by running a hose from the exhaust of his old Suburban to the cab. He learns of this from his COUSIN (uncle's son), quits his job, sells and gives away almost all his possessions, loads what he keeps into his '79 Ranchero, sets off to New Mexico.
Cousin and COUSIN'S PARTNER - Gay Couple - fly (to El Paso from Tulsa) to hand over the keys and a helpful amount of cash, spend the night, leave the next day. He absorbs his new life, commences home improvement, which involves a trip to the hardware store that brings to his attention the animal shelter from which he later adopts two dogs, and meeting HER, 40-ish, who works at the shelter. Obvious chemistry/attraction. She gives him her card, he promises to bring the dogs by later for a follow-up.
